PAUL C WAS A MUSICAL GENIUS

Hanging out with Paul C at 12 12 studio in Jamaica Queens, you never knew what kind of magic was going to be created. The day we recorded “I Get Rough” was one of those days.

Eddie Ojay of The Clientele Brothers gave us the idea to do something off of “Brick House” by The Commodores. Paul hated to sample songs, instead he’d rather replay them himself. He tried playing the bass line with his bass guitar, but we didn’t like the way it sounded. He also tried playing it with the keyboard, and again it just wasn’t right. What he did next blew our minds. He had a disc with a bunch of different sounds that Rahzel made. Keep in mind, Rahzel is a human beat box!!

After going through a bunch of the sounds, Paul stumbled across an ill sound Rahzel made. Paul then made that sound trigger in each of the pads on the SP12. He fine tuned each pad, and we couldn’t believe what we heard!!! I laid my vocals in like 2 takes, and Quest went crazy on the cut. This is what it sounded like when we were done.

“I Get Rough” got a lot of play on the underground stations throughout the Tri State Area. I even took a few jabs at some of my peers, but it was all out of hunger and being competitive.

Paul C was most definitely ahead of his time. It was always a great time when the three of us got together. The creative energy was always on a thousand!! We took a major loss when we lost Paul C.

REST WELL MY BROTHER 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
